Why This Project?

Sandpit Village, located in the South West Region of Cameroon, has been significantly affected by unemployment, food insecurity, and the socio-political crisis that has disrupted livelihoods and displaced many households.

Women, unemployed youth and single mothers are among those most affected. Limited income opportunities and rising food prices have made it increasingly difficult for vulnerable households to meet their daily nutritional needs.

At the same time, the region has fertile volcanic soils and favourable climatic conditions that offer excellent opportunities for sustainable vegetable production.

Recognising this potential, Impact Circle Germany e.V., together with its local partner MUAFCIG, launched this project to strengthen food security, improve household incomes, and promote sustainable agriculture through practical training, agricultural inputs and continuous technical support.

Our Approach

We designed the project around a practical learning model that enables beneficiaries to immediately apply newly acquired skills.

Agricultural Inputs

Community & Household Gardens

Monitoring & Technical Support

Harvest

Improved Food Security & Household Income

This approach ensured that beneficiaries received not only training, but also the resources and follow-up support necessary to establish productive vegetable gardens.

From Training to Harvest

1. Training Workshop

The project began with a two-day practical workshop attended by 100 beneficiaries, including unemployed youth, abandoned single mothers and widows.

Participants received hands-on training in:

• Organic vegetable production

• Compost preparation

• Seedbed establishment

• Sustainable pest management

• Record keeping

• Marketing

The workshop also established five community demonstration gardens for practical learning.

Workshop Highlights

2. Distribution of Agricultural Inputs

Following the training, beneficiaries received improved vegetable seeds and essential farming tools to establish their own gardens.

Distributed items included:

• Tomato seeds

• Pepper seeds

• Vegetable seeds

• Watering cans

• Wheelbarrows

• Hoes

• Machetes

• Sprayers

• Rakes

• Water containers

3. Land Preparation & Garden Establishment

Beneficiaries immediately began preparing their fields and establishing household and community vegetable gardens.

Throughout this phase, MUAFCIG provided technical guidance to ensure that recommended organic farming practices were correctly implemented.

  • Land preparation
  • Planting
  • Garden establishment

4. Monitoring & Technical Support

Regular monitoring visits formed an important part of the project.

Field visits allowed project staff to:

• assess crop development

• provide technical advice

• identify challenges

• encourage farmers

• document project progress

Continuous support contributed significantly to the successful establishment of productive gardens.

5. Harvest

The project concluded with successful harvests of tomatoes, huckleberry, peppers and other vegetables.

Many beneficiaries reported improved food availability, while surplus production was sold in local markets to generate household income.

The harvest demonstrated the effectiveness of combining practical training, quality inputs and ongoing technical support.

Beneficiary Voices

“Our Harvest Has Increased”

“As you can see, our harvest this year has increased compared to last year. We are grateful for the support we received. With continued support and hard work, I hope that in future seasons we will produce between 500 and 1,000 baskets of tomatoes.”

Sustainability

The project was designed to create lasting impact beyond the funding period.

Beneficiaries continue cultivating their household gardens using the knowledge and skills acquired during the project.

The community demonstration gardens remain active learning sites, while MUAFCIG continues to provide periodic technical guidance and monitor beneficiary progress.

Beneficiaries are encouraged to reinvest part of the income generated from vegetable sales into future production cycles, helping to strengthen household resilience and promote long-term food security.

The experience gained through this project provides a strong foundation for scaling similar community-based agricultural initiatives in other regions of Cameroon.

Looking Ahead

Building on the success of this initiative, Impact Circle Germany e.V. is exploring new opportunities to strengthen agricultural value chains in Cameroon through:

  • post-harvest processing and value addition;
  • solar drying technologies for vegetables, peppers, spices and herbs;
  • improved storage and packaging;
  • enhanced market access for smallholder farmers;
  • continued partnerships with local community organisations.

These future initiatives aim to increase farmers’ incomes, reduce post-harvest losses and strengthen sustainable rural livelihoods.
