Education in Crisis: Supporting Displaced Children in Melong, Cameroon

Programme Overview

Impact Circle Germany e.V. is supporting conflict-affected children and families in Cameroon through an education programme implemented in partnership with Impact Circle for Nature (ICFN). The programme responds to the urgent educational needs of internally displaced children who have fled the ongoing Anglophone Crisis in Cameroon’s two English-speaking regions.

Thousands of families have been forced to leave their homes due to violence, school shutdowns and insecurity. Many have resettled in French-speaking regions of the country, including Melong, where access to safe, inclusive and quality education remains extremely limited.

Context: Education Disrupted by Conflict

Since the outbreak of the Anglophone Crisis, schools in affected regions have been repeatedly attacked, occupied or closed. As a result:

  • Children have lost years of schooling

  • Families have been displaced multiple times

  • Overcrowded host-community schools are overstretched

  • Many children are learning in unsafe, temporary or informal conditions

  • Trauma, poverty and instability affect learning outcomes

In Melong, displaced children often share cramped classrooms or study in makeshift structures without adequate learning materials, trained teachers or psychosocial support.

The Project: Melong Integrated Bilingual Nursery & Primary School (MINBIPS)

To respond to this crisis, Impact Circle Germany e.V., in close collaboration with Impact Circle for Nature, is supporting the establishment of the École maternelle et primaire bilingue intégrée de Melong (MINBIPS).

The project aims to provide:

  • Safe and inclusive learning spaces for displaced and host-community children

  • Bilingual education (English and French) to support integration and continuity

  • Access to quality teaching, learning materials and digital tools

  • A community-driven approach that involves parents and youth

The school will operate initially from a site temporaire while construction of a permanent school facility is underway.
